Chinese exhibitors are increasingly combining intangible cultural heritage and Eastern aesthetics with contemporary design. At the 140th China Import and Export Fair, widely known as the Canton Fair, traditional crafts are being reimagined in new forms aimed at international consumers.

In the home gifts exhibition area, artisans specializing in Daoming bamboo weaving are showcasing their products for the second time in the fair's nearly 70-year history. The craft is recognized on China's national intangible cultural heritage list.

Beyond traditional baskets, the exhibits include woven bamboo jewelry and porcelain pieces decorated with woven elements. These designs give traditional techniques a contemporary expression and make them suitable for modern consumer lifestyles.

"Moving beyond product sales to cultural output, we are not only bringing bamboo products to the world, but also hope to introduce Chinese aesthetics and the Chinese way of life to friends around the globe," said Bai Jingbo, a Daoming bamboo-weaving artisan.

Prospective international buyers say the cultural stories and craftsmanship behind these products can make them particularly appealing to consumers. U.S. buyer Julia Pacheco praised the way the pieces combine ancient and modern China, describing them as beautiful and suitable for gifts.

Interest is also growing in fashion accessories that incorporate traditional techniques. In the Fashion Jewelry Zone, a copper-carved brooch caught the attention of Brazilian buyer John Leal, who expressed an intention to purchase it after trying it on.

"I was impressed by how well Chinese heritage was blended with Western lifestyles. I've been sourcing products in China for more than 10 years, and whenever I find something interesting, I want to introduce it to my overseas clients. Products like these balance tradition with modern luxury and help carry Chinese heritage forward to younger generations," Leal said.

According to Zhang Jie, vice president of the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Light Industrial Products and Arts-Crafts, more small-commodity exporters are focusing on design and brand development. The innovative reinterpretation of Eastern aesthetics has become a new highlight at the fair.

By incorporating contemporary design and adapting products to modern consumer needs, manufacturers can distinguish their goods in markets across Europe, the United States, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Cultural elements can also increase the added value of products and help exporters explore new growth opportunities.

According to CCTV+, the 140th Canton Fair is being held in three phases in Guangzhou and runs through November 4. Over nearly seven decades, it has developed into China's largest and longest-running international trade event, featuring a broad range of products and attracting buyers from around the world. The exhibits demonstrate how traditional craftsmanship, modern design and brand development can work together to bring Chinese cultural heritage to global markets.
