At least 139 migrants killed in boat capsize off Djibouti
At least 139 migrants have died and another 84 remain missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti, the International Organization for Migration said Sunday.
The vessel was carrying 305 people and was traveling from Djibouti to Yemen when it overturned during the night between Thursday and Friday near Obock, close to Guehere and Godoria.
According to the International Organization for Migration, men, women and children were on board. Search and recovery operations are continuing, and the death toll could rise further.
Djiboutian authorities are continuing efforts to locate those still missing and recover victims. Around 82 people survived the shipwreck, according to the UN migration agency.
Similar deadly incidents have repeatedly occurred along Djibouti's Red Sea coast. Many migrants from East Africa attempt the dangerous sea crossing in hopes of reaching other countries in the region through Yemen.
Saudi Arabia, located north of Yemen, remains the main destination for many of those making the journey.
According to CCTV+, search operations off Djibouti are continuing, while the fate of dozens of people who were on board remains unknown.
