Bosphorus Cup Race Between Two Continents Celebrates Its Anniversary

The legendary Bosphorus Strait, which connects Europe and Asia, as well as the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara, has united cultures and trade routes for centuries. In September this year, the strait once again turned into an exciting racecourse as the Bosphorus Cup sailing regatta celebrated its 25th anniversary. The three-day competition brought together international crews and local sailors in the heart of the metropolis.

Over the weekend, the busy shipping strait was taken over by colorful sailing boats competing against the backdrop of Istanbul’s suspension bridges and historic neighborhoods.
For a quarter of a century, the Bosphorus Cup has offered a unique way to experience the atmosphere of Istanbul both from the water and from the shore. Sailing boats can be watched completely free of charge from the waterfront promenades. The snow-white sails against the backdrop of Ottoman palaces, historic mansions and lively neighborhoods highlight the city’s unique charm. A ferry ride, a walk along the waterfront or dinner overlooking the strait all demonstrate why the Bosphorus remains the heart of Istanbul.

The easiest way to explore the Bosphorus is to take a cruise on a city ferry or sightseeing boat departing from the Kabataş or Eminönü piers. From the water, visitors can enjoy magnificent views of Ottoman palaces, stone fortresses and waterfront yali mansions.
It is also worth taking a trip to the Princes’ Islands (Adalar). The islands of Büyükada, Heybeliada, Kınalıada, Burgazada and Sedef offer a peaceful escape among lush green wooden villas and cozy waterfront restaurants.
Life along the shores of the Bosphorus is inseparably connected with Turkey’s rich cuisine. Breakfast or brunch by the water featuring traditional cheeses, olives and fresh pastries is a favorite tradition among both Istanbul residents and visitors. In the evening, seafood restaurants, establishments recommended by the MICHELIN Guide, and picturesque terrace cafés open their doors.

For sports enthusiasts, the Bosphorus waterfront features walking and running paths, cycling routes and retro electric moped rentals. Water-sports fans can also enjoy windsurfing, water cycling or SUP boarding with views of Istanbul’s historic skyline.
