Key Initiatives of the President of Turkmenistan Announced at the CIS Heads of State Meeting

Speaking at the meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State in Avaza, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov presented a comprehensive program of Turkmenistan’s strategic initiatives to the leaders of the Commonwealth nations.
The Head of State briefed his counterparts on the outcomes of the recent meeting of the Khalk Maslakhaty; the decisions adopted there lay a solid foundation for the country’s international engagement—including within the Commonwealth of Independent States—while creating new opportunities and scope for collaborative efforts.
Particular emphasis was placed on the transport sector and the full realization of the region's logistical and infrastructural potential. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov expressed his conviction that CIS countries are poised to play an active role in strengthening international partnerships in the field of sustainable transport. A major milestone in this area is Turkmenistan’s initiative to designate 2029 as the "Year of Transport Connectivity in the CIS," a move that paves the way for systematic, joint cooperation.
In addition, the Head of State emphasized the significance of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035)—an initiative of Turkmenistan adopted via a UN General Assembly resolution—and called upon his colleagues to actively cooperate in its implementation.
The Head of Turkmenistan identified the Caspian region as a crucial element of continental connectivity; given developments in countries and regions neighboring the CIS, the East-Caspian and West-Caspian routes of the North-South corridor are taking on vital importance there.
The objectively growing role of technological linkages necessitates the creation of new production chains across the Eurasian space. Addressing the international agenda, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov called for joint efforts to uphold international law and the UN Charter, noting that, on Turkmenistan’s initiative, the UN General Assembly had proclaimed 2028 the "Year of International Law" during its 80th session.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan put forward this initiative based on a firm conviction regarding the need to preserve the legal foundations of the global security architecture; he expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth nations that supported the draft resolution, thereby contributing to the adoption of this important document.
In his address, the Head of State also noted that Turkmenistan, while working to implement joint plans and projects, would continue to strengthen friendship and good-neighborly relations within the framework of the CIS.
