Japanese citizens rally following incident in Okinawa
A group of Japanese citizens rallied outside the U.S. Embassy on Wednesday following an incident in Okinawa in which a U.S. service member was detained on suspicion of killing a local woman.
According to Okinawa prefectural police, 20-year-old Devin Ballard, stationed at U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, is suspected of involvement in the death of a 39-year-old woman at a hotel in Naha. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
Participants in the rally expressed concern over public safety and called for measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
They also raised broader questions about relations between local communities and U.S. military facilities stationed in the region.
