New Leopard Cubs Spotted in Syunt-Khasardag Nature Reserve
Exciting news has arrived from the Syunt-Khasardag Nature Reserve: camera traps have once again helped researchers gain insight into the lives of the rare leopards inhabiting the mountains of Turkmenistan.
In late July 2026, cameras captured a female leopard named Uzukdzhemal with three cubs. Specialists from the Team Bars Turkmenistan group believe the cubs may have been born as early as March.
"Footage from February already showed her with a noticeably rounded belly, which confirms our suspicions," the researchers noted. The new footage also allows for tracking the history of Uzukdzhemal’s family. Cubs typically remain with their mother for 18 to 24 months. One of her cubs, born in 2024, was spotted on its own in late October 2025—at approximately 18 months of age.
Camera traps and field research help monitor the lives of leopards. Thanks to these tools, specialists are gradually piecing together details of the animals' lives—details that otherwise remain hidden from human view for the most part.
"For a researcher, one of the most rewarding aspects of this work is piecing together scattered clues, formulating a hypothesis, and then waiting to see whether new data will confirm or refute it," says the Team Bars Turkmenistan group.
The researchers also expressed their gratitude to the staff of the Syunt-Khasardag Nature Reserve, who ensure the safety of the leopards, and to team member Khojamurad Khojamuradov, who helps maintain the network of camera traps.
