Turkmenistan and Lithuania discuss expanding trade and economic cooperation

A meeting was held in Ashgabat between representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and a Lithuanian delegation, during which the sides discussed prospects for expanding trade and economic cooperation, as well as developing transport and logistics ties.
The meeting took place on October 1. The Lithuanian delegation was headed by Dainius Varnas, Chairman of the Interparliamentary Friendship Group with Turkmenistan in the Seimas of Lithuania. This was reported by the press service of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
The sides considered further development of bilateral relations in the trade and economic, cultural, and humanitarian spheres.
Particular attention was paid to opportunities for cooperation within the “Central Asia — European Union” format. Lithuanian representatives noted that this format opens up additional opportunities for developing political dialogue, as well as transport and logistics corridors between the countries of the region.
The participants also emphasized the importance of interparliamentary cooperation as one of the areas of bilateral partnership. In particular, they discussed the exchange of experience in the field of legislative work.
Diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Lithuania were established in 1992. Cooperation between the two countries covers the political, trade and economic, transport, educational, and cultural-humanitarian spheres.
Transport and logistics play an important role in developing ties between Central Asia and Europe. Turkmenistan has opportunities to develop routes across the Caspian Sea, while Lithuania, as a European Union member state with access to the Baltic Sea, can serve as one of the connecting links between the markets of Central Asia and Northern Europe.
