Turkmenistan’s Environmental Initiatives for COP31 in Antalya Announced at TIF 2026

Issues regarding climate resilience, industrial decarbonization, and the adoption of innovative financial technologies took center stage at the 8th Turkmenistan Investment Forum (TIF 2026). A key highlight of the discussions was the address by Nury Jumashov, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, who announced that the country would host a special side event at the upcoming 31st session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP31) in Antalya this November. On this international platform, Turkmenistan will showcase its global and regional environmental initiatives, as well as practical achievements in climate change adaptation.
A significant practical outcome of the forum in the environmental sphere is the launch of a joint project with the World Bank under the Global Methane Reduction Program. This collaboration—which entered the implementation phase with the signing of a grant agreement on the sidelines of TIF 2026—envisages the introduction of an MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) system, the assessment of emissions at pilot sites, and the transition to international OGMP 2.0 standards.
Turkmenistan continues to advance its initiative to establish a Regional Climate Technology Center in Central Asia and to expand its renewable energy infrastructure. Flagship examples of this effort include the completion of a solar-wind power plant in Balkan Province and the achievements of Arkadag, the country’s first "smart" city.

Environmental transformation and the adoption of high standards within the real economy are closely intertwined with the digitalization of the nation's banking system. As Serdar Gurbandurdyev, Chairman of the Board of Rysgal Joint-Stock Commercial Bank, noted, achieving decarbonization and sustainable growth relies on the steady development of the fintech sector, as well as the implementation of instant payment systems, artificial intelligence, and biometric technologies. The integration of digital payment services and internet acquiring creates the necessary technological platform for rapidly scaling up green and innovative projects across the entire economy.
