Italy extends border checks with Spain for another 15 days
Italy has extended checks at its air and maritime borders with Spain for another 15 days amid the continuing situation in Ceuta.
According to Corriere della Sera, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi made the decision following a meeting of the Committee for the Analysis of Immigration and Border Security.
The extension is linked to the continuing situation in Ceuta and ongoing migration and border-management concerns. Italian authorities have notified the European Commission and the interior ministers of other EU member states about the decision.
This is the third extension of the temporary controls since the situation in Ceuta intensified. Checks remain in place at Italian airports and seaports for arrivals from Spain, amounting to a temporary reintroduction of internal border controls within the Schengen area.
On July 31, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced temporary checks on third-country nationals arriving from Spain, citing national security and border-management concerns.
Spain responded later the same day by temporarily restoring checks on travelers arriving from Italy.
According to CCTV+, the extension means temporary controls between the two Schengen countries will remain in place for at least another 15 days. Further decisions will depend on developments in Ceuta and Italy's assessment of the border situation.
