Wang Yi: Xi Jinping’s U.S. visit gives new momentum to China-U.S. relations
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the United States concluded with new understandings between Beijing and Washington. According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the two sides added new substance to the vision of a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability.
Speaking to journalists after the Sept. 23-25 state visit, Wang said Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held candid and in-depth discussions on bilateral ties and the international situation in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
Wang said the two leaders had maintained close contact since the start of Trump’s second term, including three face-to-face meetings and five phone calls. He described the interaction marked by mutual respect and sincerity as an important strategic asset in China-U.S. relations.
Wang said a key political outcome of the visit was the agreement to build a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity. Respect, he explained, includes respect for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, each country’s choice of its social system and development path, as well as the other side’s core interests and major concerns.
Fairness, according to Wang, means pursuing mutually beneficial cooperation and resolving differences through consultation, while rejecting zero-sum approaches and attempts to secure unilateral advantage. Reciprocity means equality in sovereignty, consideration of both sides’ interests and balanced development of cooperation across various areas.
Economic and trade relations were another major focus. Wang said the two sides should expand the list of areas for cooperation and shorten the list of problems. He called on the U.S. side to treat Chinese companies fairly and address issues through dialogue and negotiations. The two countries also confirmed a number of economic and trade understandings during the visit.
On the issue of fentanyl, Wang said China was not responsible for the problem of fentanyl abuse in the United States, while stressing that Beijing had continued to assist Washington in addressing the crisis. The two leaders instructed law enforcement agencies to strengthen cooperation and jointly combat transnational crime.
To promote people-to-people exchanges, Xi announced an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China over the next five years for exchange and study programs. Wang also highlighted the planned arrival of two Chinese giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, at Zoo Atlanta.
The two leaders also discussed major international and regional issues. Wang said they exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, Iran’s nuclear issue, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula, while agreeing to strengthen coordination on issues concerning global peace and development.
Artificial intelligence was another topic of discussion. Wang said Xi and Trump discussed making use of the strengths of both countries and maintaining dialogue on AI, including efforts to prevent its misuse. China and the United States agreed to make effective use of their bilateral AI dialogue mechanisms.
Wang also stressed the shared responsibility of China and the United States, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, to uphold the postwar international order and prevent the resurgence of militarism. The two countries also reaffirmed mutual support for hosting the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G20 Summit in 2026.
As reported by CCTV+, Xi Jinping’s U.S. state visit outlined further areas of China-U.S. cooperation and added new substance to the concept of a constructive relationship of strategic stability.
