This weekend, residents of Central Asia can look forward to one of the year’s most beautiful and symbolic astronomical events: the September full moon, traditionally known as the "Harvest Moon." In 2026, it will occur on Saturday, September 26, reaching its peak at 9:49 PM local time.

The name "Harvest Moon" is rooted in ancient traditions from a time when the light of the moon compensated for the lack of electric lighting. Unlike typical full moons, where the moon rises about 50 minutes later each day, the interval between moonrises shrinks to just 20–25 minutes around the autumn equinox. Consequently, for several consecutive nights, bright moonlight floods the landscape immediately after sunset—a phenomenon that historically allowed farmers to continue harvesting their crops well into the evening.

The main spectacle for astronomy enthusiasts and photographers alike will be the moonrise. On Saturday, September 26, a massive, glowing disk will appear above the eastern horizon around 6:30 PM—almost exactly as the evening twilight fades. During the first 30 minutes after rising, the "Moon illusion" will come into play: positioned close to the horizon and nearby trees, the Moon will appear significantly larger than usual and take on a deep golden-amber or even coppery hue due to light scattering in the denser layers of the atmosphere.

Astronomers emphasize that the September full moon of 2026 will be an ideal time for viewing; no telescopes or binoculars are needed to enjoy the sight—simply stepping outside on Saturday or Sunday between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM and looking toward the open eastern horizon is all it takes.
