World expects positive outcomes from China-US leaders’ meeting

The upcoming meeting between the leaders of China and the United States is being viewed not only as an important moment for bilateral relations, but also as an event with broader implications for the international agenda. At the United Nations, there are hopes that dialogue between Beijing and Washington can help identify areas of cooperation on global issues despite persisting differences.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25 at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump. During the visit, Xi and Trump will hold an in-depth exchange of views on major issues concerning China-US relations, as well as peace and development in the world.

“This will be a very historic visit that will bring relations between the two countries to a new level. And, as we always say, bilateral relations between China and the United States go beyond the two countries; they have global significance. Naturally, people at the United Nations are eagerly looking forward to this, and everyone hopes that this historic visit will produce positive results,” Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said in an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN).

Fu said China and the United States can cooperate in areas such as counterterrorism and nuclear non-proliferation, helping make the United Nations more effective in working toward a better world. “At the United Nations, China and the United States are the two largest economies in the world, and both are permanent members of the Security Council. There are many issues on which China and the United States can cooperate, such as counterterrorism and non-proliferation,” Fu said.

He also noted that differences remain between the two countries, including over bilateral trade and a number of other pressing international issues.

“Of course, we do not deny that there are differences between the two countries, including on bilateral trade and some other pressing issues in the world. But we hope — and the world expects — that China and the United States can cooperate to make the world a better place and enhance the effectiveness and relevance of the United Nations,” he added.
