Earth-like Exoplanets with Unique Chemical Composition Were Discovered in the Milky Way


There are iron-rock exoplanets in our galaxy that are similar to Earth and consist predominantly of metals and silicates. In terms of their structure, they resemble Earth, Venus, Mercury, and Mars, but their chemical composition may differ radically from the familiar characteristics of the Solar System, TASS reports.
When studying distant worlds, astronomers consider not only their mass, radius, and temperature, but also the diversity of their internal structures. The Milky Way contains not only gas giants such as Jupiter and icy planets resembling Uranus and Neptune, but also so-called oceanids — worlds covered by global oceans that can be several kilometers deep.
According to researchers, some of the most unusual cosmic objects have yet to be discovered. Scientists theoretically allow for the existence of carbon-rich planets in which carbides, rather than a conventional silicate mantle, predominate. Such hypothetical worlds could significantly broaden our understanding of how planetary systems form.
