Greenland – a vast icy island that has become an arena of geopolitical rivalry in recent years. The European Union’s investment package is not just economic aid but a strategic move to reinforce EU influence in the Arctic. Against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s statements about possible US control over the island, Brussels is demonstrating its commitment to partnership with Greenland and Denmark, underscoring the importance of security and sovereignty in the region.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday during a visit to Nuuk announced a €200 million investment package for Greenland aimed at strengthening cooperation between the European Union and Greenland. The “Global Gateway Partnership” package will support investments in Greenland in 2026 and 2027, according to a European Commission press release. During von der Leyen’s visit, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen signed a joint declaration to strengthen the partnership.

According to the statement, the declaration and investment package will expand cooperation in education and fisheries, as well as support satellite and cable connectivity, hydropower and critical raw materials. The package also includes support for improving housing conditions, sustainable tourism and small businesses. Von der Leyen said the package would create new opportunities and strengthen the EU’s presence and engagement in Greenland and the Arctic.

As reported by CCTV+, Greenland is a self governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Repeated statements by US President Donald Trump about US control over the island have raised concerns among European allies and revived debates over security, sovereignty and NATO cohesion in the Arctic. This visit and investment package signal that the EU intends to actively engage in the Arctic agenda, strengthening ties with Greenland and countering attempts to redraw spheres of influence in the region.
