Nepal receives international aid after devastating floods and landslides

In the aftermath of a natural disaster, humanitarian assistance becomes more than material support — it is a sign of solidarity for people who have lost their homes and livelihoods. For thousands of survivors, even basic supplies can make a critical difference.

Nepal is receiving international assistance from India, China, Japan, the United States, the Republic of Korea and other countries following devastating flash floods and landslides last week.

Deadly landslides struck areas along the China-Nepal border on August 26. According to a statement released by Nepalese police on Wednesday evening, the death toll from the disaster in Nepal has risen to 1,222. International donors are providing urgently needed supplies, including drones, equipment and reagents for DNA testing, water purification systems and lighting equipment.

The assistance also includes food, medicines and other essential materials. With road connections still disrupted, relief supplies are being delivered to flood-affected communities by helicopter. Temporary shelters have been established in schools for people displaced by the disaster. Humanitarian organizations and volunteers are providing food and other basic necessities to those taking refuge there.

“When we had our own home, we could cook and eat properly. But now that we are on the road, we cannot do that. People bring us food, so we eat. If they did not distribute food, we would go hungry. I would like to ask them to help us. If they do, it will be good for us,” said survivor Srijana Saha.

Volunteers and specialists have also arrived from different parts of the world. Among them is Chinese doctor Zhang Haijing, who came to Nepal with his team to treat survivors suffering from common post-disaster illnesses and injuries.

Zhang said skin conditions are particularly common after natural disasters, while patients may also suffer from abdominal pain, upper respiratory infections, sprains and various injuries, including skin wounds and ulcers.

Thousands of people displaced by the floods and landslides are now trying to adapt to life in temporary shelters. Amid the hardship, many survivors can find some comfort in having survived and in remaining close to their loved ones.

As reported by SSTV+, international donors, humanitarian organizations and volunteers continue to support Nepal after the devastating floods and landslides, providing affected communities with food, medicine, equipment and other essential supplies.
