Why did G20 finance ministers fail to adopt a communiqué? Chinese Foreign Ministry explains

China deeply regrets that this week's meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors ended without a communiqué, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a briefing in Beijing on Wednesday. Guo made the remarks in response to a media question about why the second G20 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting, held on Monday and Tuesday in North Carolina, US, did not result in a communiqué.

In a world where global challenges require coordinated responses, the absence of consensus at the G20 platform is not just a diplomatic failure but a worrying signal. The G20 was created as a forum where the world's largest economies could find common ground in the most critical moments. When a meeting ends without a final document, it indicates that disagreements among countries are deepening and the capacity for collective action is weakening. China, as a responsible member of the community, expresses regret not because it did not get what it wanted, but because it sees the very idea of multilateral cooperation suffering.

"China is an important member of the G20 and attaches great importance to the G20's role as a major platform for international economic cooperation. Since the US took over the G20 presidency in 2026, China has actively and constructively participated in discussions on relevant issues across all areas, including finance, and has worked to promote practical outcomes within the G20 framework," Guo said. He added that China noted that parties held different views on some issues during the just concluded finance ministers and central bank governors meeting, and deeply regrets that the meeting did not result in a communiqué.

"As a major platform for international economic cooperation, the G20 should coordinate solutions to critical global economic issues objectively, fairly and in a balanced manner, based on the principles of consultation and equal participation. China hopes that the US, as the rotating chair, and all members will follow these principles, fully respect the legitimate interests of all parties and strive for positive outcomes at the 2026 G20 Summit in Miami. China is ready to work with the US to implement the important agreements reached by the heads of the two states, and join efforts with all members to encourage the G20 to play an active role in deepening macroeconomic policy coordination, improving global economic governance and promoting world economic growth," he said.

The G20 was established in 1999 as a forum for finance ministers and central bank governors, and after the 2008 crisis it became a leaders' summit. Meetings of finance ministers and central bank governors traditionally end with a joint communiqué setting out common positions on key issues of the global economy. The absence of a final document at the North Carolina meeting indicates serious disagreements among members, especially amid global instability caused by geopolitical conflicts and economic uncertainty. China, as the world's second largest economy, calls for dialogue and consensus, stressing the importance of a multilateral approach to solving global problems.

As CCTV+ reports, China's position at the G20 meeting reflects its commitment to strengthening multilateral mechanisms and finding compromises in difficult conditions. Beijing expresses hope that the upcoming summit in Miami will be more productive, and that the US as chair will be able to ensure constructive dialogue. In a world where economic and political risks continue to rise, the G20's ability to develop common solutions remains critical to global stability.
