Kazakhstan's tiger reintroduction program has entered a phase of close monitoring following the August release of the first adult female, named Umit, in the Ile-Balkhash Reserve. Project specialists have decided to hold off on releasing the male brought from Russia, postponing a final decision until at least October.

The adjustment to the release schedule is based on the predators' behavioral biology. According to the specialists' methodology, in the wild, it is the female who first establishes a territory, establishes a home range, and feels confident. Only after confirming sustainable development will the male be allowed to join her in the established habitat.

Scientists have already recorded an important adaptation success: the tigress Umit independently hunted her first meal in the Ili River delta, demonstrating her ability to hunt in the wild. Preliminary preparation of the territory took ten years: hundreds of red deer and kulans were brought into the reserve to establish a prey base, and the wild boar and roe deer populations were also boosted.

As part of a long-term, 35-year project, four Amur tigers arrived from Russia to Kazakhstan—two adults aged three to four years and a pair of cubs. Environmentalists do not intend to rush the simultaneous release of all the animals, focusing on ensuring maximum safety and the natural adaptation of each predator.
