Xi Jinping: China-Russia relations will become even stronger
Strong relations between countries are particularly important in a period of international instability. Mutual trust, strategic coordination and a commitment to cooperation can strengthen bilateral ties while also helping countries respond jointly to global challenges.
On Monday, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that under his strategic guidance and that of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and through the joint efforts of both sides, the foundation of China-Russia relations will become even stronger, their progress more sustainable and their future brighter. Xi Jinping made the remarks during a meeting with Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
The Chinese president noted that during Putin’s state visit to China in May, the two sides agreed to raise bilateral relations to a higher-quality and higher level of development from a strategic and long-term perspective. They also reached consensus on deepening cooperation across various sectors under new conditions.
According to Xi Jinping, the relevant authorities of both countries are actively implementing the agreements reached, with substantial results already achieved. Exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia continue to maintain strong momentum.
Xi Jinping also noted that uncertainty and unpredictability on the international stage have increased amid profound changes unseen in a century. At the same time, he said, the international community’s pursuit of peace, development, cooperation and mutually beneficial outcomes remains unchanged.
Xi Jinping emphasized the important role of the SCO in maintaining regional stability and promoting regional development. China is ready to work with Russia and other countries to jointly chart the future course of the organization, promote its stable and sustainable development, advance reform of global governance and promote an equal and orderly multipolar world.
Vladimir Putin, in turn, said that amid a turbulent and complex international environment, Russia and China are continuously deepening comprehensive strategic coordination. According to Putin, the two countries uphold equality, mutual trust and mutual support, while cooperation across various fields is advancing rapidly, making China-Russia relations a model for relations between states.
Putin said Russia is ready to maintain high-level exchanges with China and strengthen cooperation in trade, energy, industry, transport, science and technology, while expanding people-to-people and cultural exchanges. The Russian president also said that through the joint efforts of all parties, the SCO has developed into a dynamic and effective platform for regional cooperation with significant international influence. He stressed that Russia and China should continue strengthening solidarity and cooperation within the organization and play a guiding role.
Putin added that Russia is ready to strengthen coordination and cooperation with China through multilateral mechanisms such as the United Nations, BRICS and the G20, support China in hosting the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, and jointly promote peace, stability and prosperity around the world. The two leaders also exchanged views on international and regional issues of mutual interest.
