Icelanders voted against resuming EU accession talks in a referendum

On Sunday, local media reported that Icelanders had voted against resuming EU accession talks in a referendum held on Saturday. By Sunday morning, vote counting had been completed in all constituencies except the South West district, where, according to Icelandic public broadcaster RUV, the remaining votes could "practically not" change the outcome. Iceland applied for EU membership in 2009. Accession talks were suspended in 2013 after a eurosceptic government came to power. However, according to Icelandic parliamentary documents, the European Commission maintains that the application was never formally withdrawn.

When a small island nation proud of its independence and unique culture once again rejects the path of European integration, it becomes not just a domestic political decision but a reflection of deep deliberations on sovereignty, economic self reliance and national identity. Iceland, which survived the 2008 banking collapse and rebuilt its economy without EU help, is once again choosing its own path. The 2026 referendum showed that fears of losing control over fisheries, agriculture and immigration policy outweigh the potential benefits of membership. This vote is not just about numbers — it is a clear signal to Brussels that a small country on the edge of the Arctic values its freedom more than access to the single market.

Iceland, with a population of around 400,000, is a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and is part of the Schengen Area, but not the EU. Fisheries — the backbone of its economy — and fears that EU rules would restrict access to fish stocks have been the main arguments of opponents of membership. In 2015, Iceland formally withdrew its application, but the European Commission still considers it "frozen." The referendum, initiated by a eurosceptic party, was non binding, but the government said it would respect the outcome. Turnout was about 65%, higher than in previous referendums.

As CCTV+ reports, Icelanders' decision to once again postpone the question of EU membership confirms that European integration is not a one size fits all path. For Brussels, this is another signal that even in Northern Europe, scepticism persists. In the coming years, Iceland is likely to continue developing bilateral relations with the EU without moving towards full membership, preserving its unique model of sovereignty and resource management.
