On July 31, 2026, the first tiger release in the region's modern history took place in the Ile-Balkhash State Nature Reserve in Kazakhstan. A female Amur tiger named Umit ("Hope") was released into the wild after undergoing adaptation and behavioral testing.

This event marked the first practical stage of a joint program between Kazakhstan, Russia, and international conservation organizations to reintroduce this large predator to its historical range, formerly home to the extinct Caspian tiger.

The tigress's release caused a stir on social media, where a fake story quickly spread that the predator had allegedly left the protected area and been spotted near the town of Balkhash. Users circulated an AI-generated photo of the tiger in the steppe, but the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan quickly refuted this information. The ministry emphasized that Umit is equipped with a modern GPS/GSM satellite collar, her movements and condition are under 24/7 monitoring by specialists, and the image posted online is an AI-generated fake.

The preparatory phase of this unique project lasted over ten years. The ecosystem in the reserve in the southern Balkhash region was completely restored: riparian forests were recreated, and the population of ungulates—Bukhara deer and kulans—was significantly increased. Other individuals will soon join Umit in adaptation enclosures. The return of the tiger to the Ili River Delta marks a crucial step in restoring the unique natural heritage and biodiversity of Central Asia.
