Why Does Smartphone Memory Gradually Fill Up Even Without New Apps?

Even if a user doesn't install new apps or save a large number of photos, the smartphone's available memory can decrease over time. This is due to the accumulation of service data created by the operating system and installed apps.
This was explained by Andrey Rybnikov, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Instrumentation and Applied Software at the Russian Technical University MIREA.
According to the expert, many users notice that their smartphone's available memory is gradually depleting, even though the number of new photos, videos, and apps is barely increasing. This does not indicate a device malfunction. Service data created by the operating system and installed apps gradually takes up a significant portion of the internal storage.
Almost every application creates a cache—temporary files that speed up program launches and prevent the need to reload the same information. Messengers store photos, videos, voice messages, and image thumbnails; browsers store elements of visited pages; and navigation services store previously viewed maps. Over time, the volume of such data can reach tens of gigabytes.
Furthermore, during use, applications accumulate their own data, including search history, work logs, user settings, offline content, and backups. As a result, a program that initially occupied several hundred megabytes upon installation can increase in size several times over after a year of active use. Messengers, social networks, and streaming video services consume memory most quickly.
Additional storage is also required for photo processing. A smartphone not only stores original photos but also creates thumbnails, indexes the media library for search, and recognizes faces, text, and various objects. To perform these tasks, service files are created, occupying part of the internal storage.
During the installation of operating system updates, the device also uses additional space. The smartphone downloads installation files, temporarily stores individual components, and creates data necessary to complete the update. After installation, most of this information is deleted automatically.
If free memory is rapidly decreasing, a specialist recommends opening the "Storage" section in the device settings and checking not only the size of apps but also the amount of data they have accumulated. First, pay attention to messaging apps, browsers, navigation apps, and video services. Disable automatic downloads of unnecessary files and delete outdated offline content.
