When human experience meets the infallible memory of machines, a new medical reality is born. In a small maternal and child health centre in the rural area of Weinan, northwest China's Shaanxi Province, technology does not replace the doctor – it becomes his shadow: attentive, dispassionate, and remarkably precise. Here, far from metropolitan clinics, artificial intelligence first appears not as a threat to the profession, but as a reliable ally, turning every consultation into a council of two intellects – human and digital.
As Dr. Wang Jiapeng examines a young patient, the AI system "Impeder-AI," developed by Beijing Children's Hospital, discreetly records the conversation, analyses symptoms and delivers real-time recommendations. Instead of substituting the physician, the technology serves as an intelligent assistant, helping rural medics provide care at the level of capital-city specialists. The longer the consultation, the more accurate the AI prompts become – the system processes speech, generates case analyses, and suggests treatment options synchronously with the visit.
"This is an 'AI paediatrician' from Beijing Children's Hospital. While we examine the patient, it listens to the complaints. Its diagnosis matches mine," says Dr. Wang, head of the paediatric neurology department. He illustrates this with a case of allergic rhinitis: "Listen, the AI has also confirmed the final diagnosis. Locals often think dark circles under the eyes are caused by food retention, but in fact they are the result of swelling and blood stasis. AI helps dispel myths and make the right diagnosis."
In complex cases, the technology becomes a life-saving second opinion. During a recent consultation with a young patient suffering from narcolepsy – a rare neurological disorder – Dr. Wang tested whether the AI could offer more effective recommendations when conventional drugs failed. For many families, access to high-level paediatric care has long meant exhausting trips to provincial capitals or even Beijing. One mother, holding a thick stack of records from Xi'an, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, admitted: "If nothing works there, Beijing is our last resort." The "AI paediatrician" is set to change that reality.
The system is the fruit of nearly a decade of work. Since 2015, Beijing Children's Hospital has been digitising the collective expertise of its specialists. As president Ni Xin explained, they interviewed every expert over six months, transforming their knowledge on all diseases into a foundation for training algorithms. The software was then trained on hundreds of thousands of consultations and 30 million high-quality medical records, as well as the latest research. Since its launch over a year ago, the pilot project has expanded to 12 provinces and regions across China.
"What enables our paediatricians to treat patients and dare to do so? This 'AI paediatrician' is a medical team that never leaves the community. Just keep it running, and it will stay with us," stressed Ni Xin.
