Nvidia’s New Rubin AI Servers Were Switched to Liquid Cooling


Nvidia has introduced a fully liquid-cooled architecture for its new Rubin artificial intelligence servers. The new system eliminates the need for traditional noisy fans and powerful air-conditioning units, using water heated to 45°C to remove heat directly from the chips.
In conventional data centers, a significant share of electricity is consumed by continuous air cooling and ventilation. In the Rubin architecture, coolant circulates through a closed-loop system, absorbing excess heat directly from the microchips. The heat is then dissipated through external cooling equipment with minimal additional energy consumption.
The new technology offers several key advantages. Raising the coolant temperature significantly reduces electricity costs — for a large 50 MW data center, annual savings could reach $4 million. In addition, Nvidia’s closed-loop system reduces water consumption to almost zero compared with traditional cooling towers. The new server units are also three times more compact and operate much more quietly.
Nvidia’s latest cooling technology is expected to enable the construction of more efficient, environmentally sustainable, and compact data centers to support the continued growth of artificial intelligence worldwide.
