Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and China’s Foreign Minister, on May 26 outlined from China’s podium the requirements for the next Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The next Secretary-General will influence the future reform of the UN and, likely, the interests of its member states, China’s top diplomat said after chairing a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council on “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System”.

“China believes that the next Secretary-General should, at a minimum, meet the following requirements. First, firmly adhere to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Second, rely on fundamental constitutional principles and political experience, as well as possess significant coordinating capabilities.

Third, be effective in addressing important issues, particularly by paying attention to the interests and aspirations of developing countries. Fourth, steer UN reform in the right direction and ensure the quality and efficiency of the organization’s work,” Wang Yi said.

“The above can be summarised as follows: the next Secretary-General must demonstrate commitment to the UN Charter, outstanding competence, integrity and impartiality, as well as a willingness to take responsibility and achieve results. China, together with other countries, approaches the selection process for the new UN chief responsibly,” China’s foreign minister stated. Wang Yi also expressed gratitude to outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who has held the post for nearly ten years.

“Throughout this time, he has dedicated himself to the cause of multilateralism and has made efforts to strengthen the authority of the UN, protect peace and uphold justice,” the Chinese minister noted. Wang Yi added that his efforts have been recognised and highly appreciated by the international community.
