Intel Corporation has officially joined the ambitious TeraFab project. The partnership brings together Intel’s resources with Elon Musk’s technology giants — SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla. The goal of the alliance is to create an in-house semiconductor manufacturing facility capable of generating up to 1 terawatt of computing power annually.
Why is TeraFab needed?
Elon Musk explained that current manufacturing facilities cannot keep up with the growing demands of his companies. Tesla has a strong need for chips for electric vehicles and humanoid robots like Optimus, while SpaceX requires equipment for satellites and space-based data processing centers.
Having its own production will allow Musk’s companies to reduce dependence on external suppliers and rapidly implement innovations in artificial intelligence and robotics.
Intel’s role in the project
The involvement of Intel Foundry will be crucial for the technical implementation of the project. Intel will be responsible for:
• Chip design and architecture;
• Direct manufacturing of semiconductors;
• Advanced assembly of finished components.
While the exact construction timeline and process technology details have not yet been disclosed, the first TeraFab sites are planned to be located in Austin, Texas.
For Intel, this partnership is an opportunity to strengthen its position in the AI chip market and become a key manufacturing partner for some of the most advanced projects of the decade. The implementation of TeraFab could significantly reshape the global electronics market by making access to high computing power faster and more independent.
