Baghdad's diplomatic presence in the Turkmen capital will give impetus to the economic partnership initiated during recent high-level talks.
On Monday, March 9, Deputy Foreign Minister Serdar Mukhametdurdyev met with Chargé d'Affaires of the Republic of Iraq Jassim Mohammed Al-Attar at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan. The main reason for the meeting was the official opening of the Iraqi diplomatic mission in Ashgabat.
The opening of the Iraqi embassy is seen as a logical outcome of the intensified dialogue between the countries. The Turkmen side confirmed its readiness to provide full support for the full operation of the mission.

Key Aspects of Cooperation
Diplomatic Continuity: Political consultations in Baghdad in October 2025 gave impetus to relations.
Economic Dimension: The parties aim to intensify contacts between their business communities. Energy, trade, and logistics remain priority areas.
Humanitarian Dimension: Expanding ties in science, education, and sports is planned. Diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and Iraq were established in 2009. The opening of a full-fledged embassy in Ashgabat underscores Iraq's growing interest in the Central Asian region and Ashgabat's strategic role in energy security.
