The Favorites for the National Chess Team Have Been Determined in Ashgabat

The first round of the Turkmenistan Chess Championship's Higher League has concluded in Ashgabat. Seven intense rounds have been completed, which not only determined the favorites but also tied the knots of intrigue that the grandmasters will have to unravel in the decisive second round.

In the open category, Amanmukhammet Khommadov is causing a real sensation. His result at the intermediate finish seems incredible – 7 points out of a possible 7. Demonstrating absolute dominance, Khommadov left no chance even for the reigning national champion, Vepaly Khalynyazov, who is currently in second place with 4.5 points. However, Khalynyazov is known for his ability to snatch victory in the final, so his pursuit of the leader promises to be the main topic of the coming days. Rounding out the top three is Akhmet Gubatayev, who secured his position thanks to a key victory over his direct competitor, Shageldy Turaev.

The women's division confirms the status quo: Lala Shokhradova confidently holds the lead with 6.5 points. However, the main drama unfolds just below. Gulmira Seyilkhanova, after a brilliant start, made two mistakes towards the end of the round but retained second place. Meanwhile, experts are focusing on the defending champion, Jahan Rejepova. With 4 points, she's currently playing catch-up, but she's expected to make a "championship sprint" in the second round to secure a spot on the Olympic team.

At stake are not only titles, but also spots on the national teams. As a reminder, the men's team has already secured spots for its leaders, Saparmurat Atabayev and Meilis Annaberdiev, while Leyla Shokhradova will lead the women's team. The remaining spots on the Olympic rosters will be filled by those who can withstand the psychological pressure of the final games in Ashgabat.
