Technology | ORIENT. Microsoft has announced that the number of devices running the Windows 11 operating system has exceeded 1 billion. This milestone was reached during the last holiday quarter of 2025, and Windows 11 achieved it faster than its predecessor, Windows 10.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted that the Windows 11 user base grew by more than 45% over the year. The rising popularity of the new system is partly explained by the end of support for Windows 10, which also had a positive effect on the company’s OEM licensing revenues.
Earlier, in November 2025, Windows chief Pavan Davuluri reported that nearly one billion users were already using Windows 11. In total, it took the system 1,576 days to reach one billion devices, while Windows 10 required 1,706 days.
Microsoft had planned to bring Windows 10 to one billion devices within three years after release, but the cancellation of the Windows Phone project adjusted those plans.
Analysts note that some users still remain on previous versions of Windows; however, the transition trend toward Windows 11 remains steady, and the new system is gradually replacing the old one.
Advantages of Windows 11 compared to Windows 10:
• Modern interface — updated Start menu and taskbar.
• Improved usability — enhanced Snap Layouts and virtual desktops.
• Support for new technologies and games — DirectStorage.
• Compatibility with new processors and games.
