Legendary Fashion Designer Giorgio Armani Dies in Italy

Giorgio Armani, the world-renowned fashion designer and entrepreneur who founded the Armani fashion house, has died in Italy, the Armani Group announced. He was 90.

“With endless sorrow, Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

The group added: “Today we feel the emptiness left by the one who founded and nurtured this family — with vision, passion and dedication. In his spirit, we, the employees and family members, pledge to protect what he created and continue developing his company in his memory.”

Armani remained chief executive officer and creative director until his death. In his final interview with the Italian press last week, he reflected: “My greatest weakness is that I control everything.”

Born July 11, 1934, in Piacenza, Italy, Armani began his career in the fashion industry in the 1960s. He launched his namesake label in 1975, which quickly grew into one of the most influential fashion empires in the world. Known for his elegant, minimalist style, Armani revolutionized men’s fashion and brought Italian design to the global stage.

His collections were embraced by Hollywood stars, world leaders and athletes, securing his place as one of the most celebrated designers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
