Microsoft Teams: Long-awaited discussion threads and new features

Microsoft Teams has received one of its most anticipated updates: discussion threads. This feature, which users have waited for several years, is now available in public preview and is designed to significantly streamline communication within channels, allowing users to track replies to specific messages without overloading the main chat.

While threads are integrated into Teams channels, their implementation differs from Slack. Noga Ronen, a Senior Product Manager for Microsoft Teams, notes that users will be able to easily follow important threads and, when necessary, bring key messages back into the main chat, which will help reduce informational clutter. However, unlike the simple creation of threads in Slack, Teams channel administrators will need to manually choose between classic posts and customizable threads.

For user convenience, Microsoft has also added a separate tab for tracked threads. Here, users can quickly locate desired discussions and mute notifications from active threads. By default, only threads in which the user has participated, been mentioned, or subscribed to updates are displayed.

In addition to threads, other improvements have been introduced in Teams: users can now apply multiple emoji reactions to a single message, and searching for GIF images via the /gif command has become even more convenient.
