 Accepting applications for the Champions of the Earth award are open

The acceptance of applications for the highest environmental award of the UN – Champions of the Earth – has started. It is awarded to heads of government, representatives of civil society and the private sector, as well as innovative scientists for many years of consistent work in interests of the planet, sustainable management of natural resources.

Since its founding in 2005, the annual Champions of the Earth Award has brought fame and recognition to active leaders who inspire others with their actions to improve the world. In 2020, more candidates were nominated than ever, reflecting the growing importance of the environmental issue.

In 2017, the program was expanded and now is awarded to Young Champions of the Earth – innovators aged 18 to 30 years for outstanding ideas on environmental protection.

Last year among the winners of the award were the Prime Minister Fiji Frank Bainimarama, for his global climate change activities and commitment to national development, taking into account the climatic requirements.

Ms. Mindy Lubber from the United States received the award in the Vision for Entrepreneurship category for her aspiration to make capital markets “green” by mobilizing leading investors and companies for the benefit of actions on climate change and sustainability. Dr. Fabian Leendertz from Germany was awarded in the Science and Innovation category for his discoveries in zoonotics.

Applications are accepted until February 12, 2021.
