Balkanabat International Airport Opens: New Logistics Hub of the Region
02.05.2025 | 21:20 |Today, on May 2, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov took part in the opening ceremony of Balkanabat International Airport.
The new airport complex, occupying a vast area of 275 hectares, is a modern transport hub that fully meets high international requirements. The three-story passenger terminal with an area of 5,267 square meters is designed to service 100 passengers per hour. All necessary conditions have been created inside the terminal:
comfortable waiting rooms, ticket offices, medical, customs and migration control points, as well as cafeterias and shops. All premises are equipped with high-tech modern equipment. The airport also has a VIP terminal.
The key feature of the new airport is its powerful flight infrastructure. It has two artificial runways, each 3,200 meters long and 60 meters wide, and an extensive network of taxiways. This allows the airport to simultaneously receive aircraft of any size and capacity, including wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 777-300, Boeing 777-800 and AEROBUS family aircraft. The spacious apron with a total area of 97,200 square meters is designed to simultaneously park up to six aircraft and four helicopters. Air traffic control is carried out from a modern control tower 49.65 meters high.
The complex has a number of specialized services and facilities - a total of 8 main and 11 auxiliary buildings. These include: modern fire safety and emergency rescue service buildings, a specialized transport service, aircraft ground and technical maintenance units, checkpoints (two checkpoints equipped with the latest technology), as well as a cargo terminal and a hotel.
An important fact confirming the high quality and compliance with world standards: the new Balkanabat International Airport was built with the consulting services of Munich International Airport, Germany, representatives of which presented a certificate confirming the full compliance of Balkanabat Airport with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its full readiness for operation. This is clear evidence that the facility meets the highest world standards of safety and reliability.
The airport has modern technical systems, including a fuel and refueling complex with underground tanks, power supply systems, navigation and communication (including radio systems equipped with world-class equipment), as well as complex life support systems, such as a reservoir with tanks for various needs and a multi-stage rainwater purification system.
The airport's cargo terminal is capable of handling up to 200 tons of cargo per year. It is equipped with modern equipment, premises for various types of cargo and infrastructure for personnel. Its territory also includes recreation areas and a buffet.
Special attention in the project is paid to landscaping and improvement. 12,100 square meters are allocated for gardens and improvement of the adjacent territory. In his speech, the President of Turkmenistan especially emphasized the importance of this aspect, linking it with the national strategy to turn the country into a "country of gardening" and concern for environmental well-being and the future of generations. Beautifully decorated territory is designed to create a positive mood for passengers.
The opening of this airport is a big event for the entire west of Turkmenistan. We have a modern airport with two runways, capable of receiving even the largest aircraft. This means that traveling will become more convenient, and the coastal region will be better connected with other cities and countries. We are especially proud that the airport has received confirmation of compliance with international standards.
The launch of the new international airport in Balkanabat, implemented with the consulting participation of such a reputable partner as Munich International Airport and certified according to ICAO standards, is a convincing evidence of Turkmenistan's large-scale investments in transport infrastructure and its compliance with global requirements. The ability to receive any type of aircraft and its throughput make it a significant hub in the Caspian region, opening up new prospects for international logistics, trade and tourism. The attention paid to environmental aspects and sustainability standards, including through landscaping and water treatment systems, also corresponds to current global trends.
The opening of the Balkanabat International Airport is not just the commissioning of a new facility, but also an important step in the development of Turkmenistan's transport potential, its integration into the global transport system and a demonstration of the country's commitment to high quality standards and sustainable development.
