Snowfall in Morocco for the first time in 50 years

In early January 2025, Morocco experienced an unusual natural phenomenon: snow fell for the first time in 50 years, according to Maghreb Arabe Press.

This event affected several provinces, including Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifrane, Midelt, Taroudant, Tangier, Ouarzazate, and El-Haouz. In some areas, the snow cover reached nearly half a meter. According to the National Meteorological Center, the cause of this unusual weather was a cold cyclone that came from Northern Europe, resulting in a significant drop in temperature and heavy snowfall.

In the mountainous areas, temperatures dropped to -5 degrees Celsius. Local authorities urged citizens to be cautious and stock up on firewood for heating. The event attracted many tourists, who came to admire the snow-covered palms and oases, which became a rare exotic sight for the North African country. Local residents headed to the Oukaimeden ski resort, located just an hour's drive from Marrakech, to enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and sledding.
