Causes of a magnetic storm on Earth
17.12.2024 | 19:20 |Head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Sergey Bogachev reported a major event on the Sun, after which a magnetic storm began on Earth.
On December 15, a large prominence (a giant fountain of hot gas) was ejected into space on the Sun, up to half a million kilometers of plasma filaments. The ejection passed by the Earth, but touched the planet with the edge of its mass.
In an interview with RT, the scientist said that the storm began on Earth on December 17 at about 10:00. At the moment, it sometimes dies down, sometimes appears. The storm is assessed as insignificant, the lowest class G1. The maximum level expected is G2
