Ashgabat hosts Regional Conference on Ending Statelessness
08.11.2024 | 07:10 |Today, on November 8, Ashgabat will host a Regional Ministerial Conference dedicated to ending statelessness in Central Asia and celebrating the region's high achievements in attainment of this goal. The event is organized by the Government of Turkmenistan jointly with international partners, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Turkmenistan, which occupies a leading position in addressing the problem of statelessness, continues to actively implement international obligations in this area. The country was the first in Central Asia to join the main international conventions aimed at preventing and reducing statelessness. Since the launch of the UN global campaign #IBelong, Turkmenistan has made significant progress in providing citizenship to more than 32 thousand people, including refugees and stateless persons.
The conference will discuss best practices and solutions for the effective eradication of statelessness, as well as issues of further strengthening cooperation in Central Asia. An important element of the agenda will be the exchange of experience between the states of the region, as well as a summary of the work of Turkmenistan within the framework of the National Action Plan for the Elimination of Statelessness for 2019-2024.
Guided by the principles of international cooperation and humanism, Turkmenistan will continue to actively work within the framework of the UN global campaign aimed at eradicating the problem of statelessness, strengthening legislative mechanisms and ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all people.
The conference in Ashgabat will become an important platform for promoting the solution of this global problem and demonstrating the progress achieved by the Central Asian states, strengthening regional cooperation in the field of human rights and humanitarian aid.
