Turkmen power industry opens up new opportunities and routes

The Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan is actively working to ensure reliable power supply, build new generating capacities and export electricity. Currently, the ministry is in charge of 12 power plants with a total capacity of 7,000 megawatts, which allows it to effectively cover domestic needs and export surplus electricity in an annually increasing volume, Energy Minister of Turkmenistan Annageldy Saparov said speaking at the international conference "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan - 2024" in Ashgabat.

The head of the Ministry of Energy was a key speaker at a session dedicated to the monetization of natural gas as a low-carbon fuel in the energy transition.

Informing the audience about significant industry projects, Saparov said that with the active involvement of foreign investors, the construction of the Turkmen part of the high-voltage power transmission line Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan was completed. At the request of Afghan colleagues, Turkmen specialists expanded the Nur al-Jahad substation in the neighboring country.

The Minister emphasized the course towards the introduction of renewable energy sources, noting that a solar and wind power plant with a capacity of 10 megawatts is being prepared for commissioning in the western region of the country. This will symbolize the beginning of the transition to alternative energy sources in the country.

Saparov also announced the construction of a combined power plant on the shores of the Caspian Sea, which will increase the installed capacity and volumes of electricity exports to European countries via Azerbaijan and Turkey.

As part of the creation of the country's ring energy system, the Akhal-Balkan, Akhal-Mary and Balkan-Dashoguz high-voltage power transmission line project, financed with the participation of the Asian Development Bank, is being actively implemented, which will allow reserving and exporting electricity from different regions.

The Minister noted that negotiations are underway with European, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Turkish and other companies to attract investment and introduce advanced technologies. Turkmenistan has created a regulatory framework to protect foreign investment and invites all interested parties to cooperate, Saparov concluded.
