China tightens regulation of marine water discharges
22.10.2024 | 15:04 |To protect the marine environment, China has tightened regulations on wastewater discharges into the sea.
This follows from new regulatory measures published on Friday by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Previously, state regulation mainly covered industrial discharges and wastewater from urban treatment facilities. According to the trial measures, all types of marine sewage discharges will now be subject to government regulation.
The ministry stated that it will now implement categorized management of marine discharges based on their impact on the marine environment and control the discharge of wastewater throughout the process.
It will also enhance the national platform for monitoring and managing marine discharges, strengthen local oversight, and conduct timely research and assessments.
The tightening of regulations follows a rapid increase in the number of marine discharges during inspections.
