 Turkmenistan's Largest Almond Producer Achieves Global Food Safety Certification with USAID Support

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, October 16, 2024 – In a significant boost to Turkmenistan's agricultural sector, the country's largest almond producer, Hemsaýa, obtained the prestigious GLOBALG.A.P. certification in September 2024. This achievement, supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), marks a major step forward in aligning Turkmenistan's farming practices with international standards.

Hemsaýa, a subsidiary of Joint Stock company Miwe, operates a sprawling 180-hectare almond farm in the Kaakhka district of the Ahal region. The farm, which employs over 70 local workers, underwent a rigorous certification process in August 2024.

"This certification is a game-changer for Turkmenistan's agricultural exports," said Rustam Bekmuradov, Country Director of USAID's Trade Central Asia activity in Turkmenistan. "It opens doors for Turkmen produce in global markets, potentially boosting the country's economy and creating more job opportunities in the agricultural sector."

The GLOBALG.A.P. certification, recognized in 132 countries, ensures that food is produced safely and sustainably. For consumers, this means assurance of food quality, environmental protection, and ethical labor practices.

Hemsaýa's journey to certification was supported by USAID's Trade Central Asia activity, which facilitated:

1. Implementation of international standards across the entire production cycle;

2. Training for 11 local professionals in GLOBALG.A.P. auditing and farming consulting;

3. Participation in the Macfrut 2024 exhibition in Italy, showcasing Turkmen produce to global buyers.

Yhlas Hudaynazarow CEO of Miwe, expressed enthusiasm about the certification: "This achievement not only validates our commitment to quality but also positions Turkmenistan as a reliable source of premium almonds in the global market."

Hemsaýa's success follows that of the "Ýigit" greenhouse complex, which obtained GLOBALG.A.P. certification in February 2023, also with USAID support. These milestones demonstrate the growing capacity of Turkmenistan's agricultural sector to meet international standards.

As Turkmenistan continues to diversify its economy, the agricultural sector's adherence to global standards promises to play a crucial role in the country's economic development and food security.
