The White House Office of Science and Technology will be coordinating a 5-year research project to study ways to "darken" the Sun in an attempt to mitigate the effects of the climate crisis, CNBC reports.

The project is based on the idea of changing the amount of sunlight reaching the Earth in order to reduce global warming caused by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The idea to block out some of the sunlight came about in 2020 during a study by South African scientists. Researchers from the University of Cape Town have prepared a plan to protect our planet's water resources by releasing huge amounts of sulfur dioxide gas into the atmosphere over cities to permanently "darken" the Sun.

According to the White House, this plan will reduce the risk of water shortages by 90 percent by 2100. However, this idea was opposed by many experts. It has been stated that the sulfur dioxide method may have harmful effects on the environment and human health.
