 EBRD will help to extinguish the gas crater in Darvaza Turkmenistan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is willing to cooperate with Turkmenistan in reducing harmful emissions into the atmosphere and is ready to help stop the leakage of natural gas in the crater, which is located in the Darvaza region.

The head of the EBRD Odile Renaud-Basso writes about this in a letter addressed to the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The contents of the message were published today in the official Turkmen press.

The EBRD demonstrated great interest in the decision of the Turkmen government to pay attention to the problem of the burning gas crater in Darvaza, the head of the bank writes and notes that the EBRD Country Strategy for Turkmenistan for 2019-2024 gives priority to investments aimed at reducing environmental pollution.

"We would like to express our interest in supporting Turkmenistan in exploring possible technical and economic options for stopping the burning of associated gas," the message from Renault–Basso reads.

The EBRD offers to provide the following support:

– to study the possibility of raising funds to prepare a plan to reduce CO2 and methane emissions from the crater in Darvaza,

– to prepare a technical task,

– to select and conclude a contract with qualified consultants,

– to create a working group with the participation of specialists from relevant ministries and departments of Turkmenistan.

Renault-Basso offered to discuss cooperation between the EBRD and Turkmenistan in reducing harmful emissions during an online meeting at any convenient time.

Also in the letter, the Head of the EBRD expressed gratitude for the efforts and commitment of the Turkmen government to reduce harmful elections and welcomed the progress made by the country in improving the relevant national legal framework.
