Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday outlined his country’s contributions to the work of the United Nations at a high-level Security Council meeting.
This year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China in the UN. Over those 55 years, as a permanent member of the Security Council, China has actively participated in UN activities, said Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
Amid international instability and transformation, China holds its banner high, Wang said at the open high-level Security Council meeting on upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the UN-centered international system.
China’s important vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind and its four major global initiatives have received broad international support, he noted.
“Amid frequent global conflicts, China promotes peace and encourages negotiations. China applies its unique approach to resolving acute issues, including establishing a Group of Friends for Peace on the Ukrainian crisis within the UN platform, constantly contributing to maintaining world peace,” Wang said.
“Amid a global development impasse, China empowers and strengthens its partners. Under the Global Development Initiative, more than $23 billion has been mobilized, over 1,800 cooperation projects have been supported, up to 10,000 capacity-building programs for developing countries have been implemented and more than 200,000 professionals in various fields have been trained. This has given a powerful impetus to the development of Global South countries,” he added.
“Amid major public crises, China rushes to help. In 2015, China fully supported three West African countries in their fight against Ebola. China is ready to provide the maximum possible assistance to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda in combating the current Ebola outbreak. Chinese medical teams are now fighting the disease shoulder to shoulder with their African brothers,” China’s top diplomat said.
“Amid opposition to multilateral cooperation, China takes responsibility. China faithfully fulfills its financial obligations, being the second largest contributor to the UN regular budget. China has established and effectively uses the China-UN Peace and Development Fund and the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund,” he said.
China initiated the establishment of the International Organization for Mediation and the World Data Organization. China proposed the creation of a World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization and actively offered to host the Secretariat of the Agreement on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction, he added.
“All of these are concrete efforts by China to build solid pillars for multilateral cooperation,” Wang said.
