Experts from Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan will meet soon in trilateral format to discuss the progress in the implementation of energy projects. It was announced by Afghan deputy minister of energy and water Abdul Basir Azimi on the sidelines of the visit of the Turkmen delegation to Kabul, TOLONews agency reports.
According to Azimi, the Afghan authorities have reached agreements with the Asian Development Bank on the implementation of the project of transit supplies of Turkmen electricity to Pakistan via the western provinces.
Some economists believe that Afghanistan, bordering on the north with energy rich Turkmenistan, and in the south - with countries experiencing acute energy shortages, can become a favorable energy corridor.
In December 2015, the heads of three states signed a Memorandum on the promotion of the export of Turkmen electricity through Afghanistan to Pakistan. At present, technical work is being carried out.
According to ADB estimates, by 2020 Turkmenistan will have about 3,500 MW excess power available for export.
To date, only 70% of Pakistan's population has electricity access. As economy measure, Pakistani urban and rural areas suffer from forced daily power cutoff for 6-8 hours.
