As New Year’s Day approaches, major business districts in Shanghai are rolling out innovative consumption models by integrating culture, tourism, commerce and sports, offering diverse experiences for residents and visitors.

Xuhui Riverside, an open-air urban space along the Huangpu River, has emerged as a popular destination. A newly opened 1,500-square-meter outdoor ice rink — the largest in downtown Shanghai — combines riverside skating with live performances.

On New Year’s Eve, waterfront restaurants along the promenade were fully booked. Customer numbers during the three-day holiday are expected to rise by about 30 percent compared with normal levels.

Visitors can enjoy markets, river views, music performances, parades and dining, making outdoor celebrations a new trend for the holiday. Meanwhile, other commercial areas across Shanghai are also upgrading old streets and launching exhibitions, performances and interactive activities to further boost holiday consumption.
