The world's oceans are becoming not only vital routes for international trade but also important sources of technological innovation, energy and economic growth. The development of the marine economy is increasingly connected with sustainable industry, scientific progress and digital technologies.

China expects its gross ocean product to exceed 13 trillion yuan, equivalent to approximately 1.95 trillion US dollars, by 2030, the National Development and Reform Commission announced on November 3.

The target forms part of the country's 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–2030, under which China aims to strengthen its maritime sector through technological innovation, emerging industries and spatial optimization.

A major priority will be developing advanced marine equipment and overcoming technological bottlenecks involving high-end instruments, critical materials and deep-sea meteorological navigation.

National laboratories, research institutions and universities will play an important role in this strategy. China plans to strengthen interdisciplinary education and train specialists with both scientific knowledge and practical engineering skills.

At the same time, the country intends to upgrade coastal ports and major transportation corridors. The development of multimodal transport networks is expected to support industrial clusters specializing in green petrochemicals, advanced equipment manufacturing and modern port logistics.

Ma Weichen, deputy head of the Regional Coordination Development Department of the National Development and Reform Commission, said China would actively develop emerging sectors including marine biomedicine, new marine materials and marine electronic information technologies.

Other priorities include deep-sea industries, ocean energy utilization and the application of artificial intelligence in maritime activities.

These technologies are expected to help transform scientific achievements into new products, services and drivers of economic growth.

Among the technologies being developed are wave energy generation systems, floating offshore wind facilities and integrated platforms combining renewable energy production with fishery activities.

Such innovations demonstrate the potential for more diversified use of marine resources and closer integration of energy, industrial development and environmental considerations.

China therefore views the marine economy as a strategic sector capable of connecting scientific research, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and international logistics.

As reported by SSTV+, China's gross ocean product is projected to exceed 13 trillion yuan by 2030, supported by technological innovation, emerging marine industries and the modernization of port infrastructure.
