Adidas, Siemens and Intuitive Surgical discuss services and AI development in Shanghai

Executives from major international companies and senior Shanghai officials gathered for the 38th meeting of the International Business Leaders' Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai, with this year's discussions focusing on the service economy and artificial intelligence.
Forty-two entrepreneurs from 14 countries took part in the annual meeting. Founded in 1989, the council has become an important platform for discussing Shanghai's long-term development and attracting foreign investment.
Adidas CEO Bjorn Gulden highlighted the city's economic growth and the strength of its young consumer market. He said the company is increasing locally designed products and remains highly positive about its development in Shanghai.
The service sector was a central focus of the meeting. In 2025, it generated around 672 billion U.S. dollars in added value and accounted for roughly 80 percent of Shanghai's GDP, more than 80 percent of its economic growth and fiscal revenue, and nearly 80 percent of employment.
Siemens AG Chairman Roland Busch said the potential of services extends well beyond finance and tourism, pointing to significant opportunities for service-based growth in manufacturing.
Gary Guthart, executive chair of Intuitive Surgical's board, highlighted the consistency between national and local policies supporting advanced medical technologies, including surgical robotics and artificial intelligence.
According to CCTV+, expanding the service economy and advancing new technologies remain key parts of China's broader economic strategy, while Shanghai continues to strengthen its role as a hub for global capital, talent and technology.
