Xi Jinping calls on China and the U.S. to expand cooperation and jointly address global challenges
The deep interconnection between the interests of China and the United States creates not only challenges but also opportunities for practical cooperation. At a White House welcome ceremony, Xi Jinping stressed that cooperation between the two major powers matters not only for their peoples but also for addressing a broad range of global issues.
On Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping said the interests of China and the United States are closely intertwined and that the two countries have many opportunities for cooperation. He called on both sides to work together to address global challenges.
Speaking at a welcome ceremony hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, Xi said he had come to the United States at Trump’s invitation to “continue our friendship, expand cooperation and promote the well-being of the peoples of both countries.”
Noting that China and the United States had agreed to build constructive relations featuring strategic stability, Xi called for more sincere cooperation and stressed the responsibilities of the two major countries.
“The interests of China and the United States are closely intertwined, and we have many opportunities to work together. China-U.S. cooperation may not solve all the problems in the world. But without our cooperation, it would be difficult to solve many of the world’s problems,” Xi said.
The Chinese president also said China welcomes U.S. companies interested in investing and doing business in the country, and expressed hope that Chinese companies in the United States would receive fair treatment.
According to Xi, working together would allow the two countries to expand the areas of cooperation while reducing the number of problems between them.
He also called for closer cooperation in the development and governance of artificial intelligence and in law enforcement, and urged the two countries to increase the number of direct flights between China and the United States to facilitate travel and trade.
At Trump’s invitation, Xi Jinping is paying a state visit to the United States from September 23 to 25. It is his second state visit to the United States after his first visit in 2015, and comes after Trump’s visit to Beijing in May.
