Xi Jinping calls for China-U.S. ties based on cooperation and managed differences
The meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House marked another stage of direct dialogue between China and the United States. The two leaders discussed trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and major international issues, while Xi called for an approach centered on cooperation, moderate competition and the proper management of differences.
On Thursday, Xi Jinping called for putting into practice a new vision of constructive China-U.S. relations featuring strategic stability and finding the right path toward mutual understanding between the two major countries. Xi made the remarks during his meeting with Trump at the White House.
Xi noted that the exchange of visits by the leaders of China and the United States within less than six months is unprecedented in the history of bilateral relations. He said he and Trump had maintained communication through various channels and worked together to advance the “giant ship” of China-U.S. relations.
Recalling their agreement in May to build constructive China-U.S. relations featuring strategic stability, Xi said the new vision reflects the realities of bilateral ties and expectations for their future.
He said the relationship should be based on cooperation, moderate competition, managed differences and a commitment to peace. China and the United States, Xi said, can achieve mutual benefit through practical cooperation, help each other succeed through healthy competition, properly manage differences, and strengthen mutual trust.
Economic and trade ties were a major focus of the meeting. Xi said the two countries’ economic and trade teams had held a new round of consultations and reached a new joint agreement, calling it good news for industries and people in both countries as well as the global economy.
Xi stressed that cooperation is a two-way street. Stable China-U.S. economic and trade relations, he said, require both expanding the list of areas for cooperation and reducing the list of problems.
He expressed hope that both sides would uphold equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit and promote the sustained, stable and healthy development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations.
Artificial intelligence was another major topic. Xi said China and the United States are leading countries in AI and, despite their competition, have even more reasons to cooperate. He called on both sides to make use of each other’s strengths rather than guard against one another.
According to Xi, the two countries can continue dialogue on AI, exchange views on its risks and benefits, and work together to prevent its misuse and abuse. He also stressed the need to maintain human control over AI, follow a people-centered approach and ensure that the technology serves human progress.
On Taiwan, Xi reiterated China’s position on national reunification and territorial integrity. He expressed hope that the United States would oppose “Taiwan independence” and handle the Taiwan question prudently, laying a solid foundation for strategic cooperation and the development of bilateral relations.
Trump, for his part, described Xi’s state visit to the United States as a successful one and said that China and the United States are major countries whose leaders maintain close communication. He expressed confidence that relations between the two countries would continue to develop successfully.
The U.S. president also noted the results of the latest round of economic and trade consultations and called for continued dialogue to achieve further agreements.
On AI, Trump said the technology is shaping humanity’s future and that the United States and China should maintain dialogue and strengthen cooperation in this area.
The two leaders also exchanged views on major international and regional issues, including the situation in the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula.
Xi and Trump also confirmed that the two countries would support each other in hosting the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G20 Leaders’ Summit in 2026.
