China and the UK: a new direct flight from Fujian to London
Chinese airline Xiamen Airlines launched its first direct passenger flight from Fujian Province in eastern China to the United Kingdom. The new Xiamen–London route was officially inaugurated on Sunday. Flight MF821, carrying more than 260 passengers, took off early on Sunday morning, marking the first direct passenger connection between the province and the UK.
When an airline opens a new direct route, it does not just connect two cities — it shortens distances, facilitates business contacts and opens new horizons for tourists. Xiamen, one of China's key port cities, is now linked directly to London, the financial and cultural heart of Europe. This is not just a route on the map but a bridge between two dynamic regions, saving passengers hours of travel and making journeys more comfortable. For Fujian, known for its economic potential and global diaspora, this route is an important step in strengthening international ties.
"It is more convenient to transfer via Xiamen and takes less time than via Beijing or Shanghai," said one passenger. "This is my first time. I think it is a good choice for others too — some people miss the plane, others want to transfer because of the long flight. You know, I think it is a good choice," said another passenger.
Flights operate three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The flight time is about 13 hours, roughly seven hours less than on previous connecting routes.
The new Xiamen–London route has become an important addition to Xiamen Airlines' international network. Previously, passengers from Fujian had to fly via Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong, which extended total travel time to 20 hours or more. The direct flight not only saves time but also reduces passenger fatigue, which is particularly important for business travellers and families with children. Xiamen Airlines, one of China's leading carriers, is steadily expanding its route network and strengthening its position in the international market. The new route is expected to be popular both with Chinese tourists heading to Europe and British travellers wishing to visit southeastern China.
As CCTV+ reports, the launch of the Xiamen–London direct flight is a significant event for China's aviation industry and international tourism. Cutting travel time by nearly half makes travel more accessible and comfortable, while three weekly flights ensure a stable link between the two regions. In the coming years, further expansion of the route network from Chinese cities to Europe is expected, strengthening trade and cultural ties between China and the West.
