China to boost NEV sector support
China will strengthen support for the new energy vehicle (NEV) sector to further contribute to the global automotive industry transformation, said Deputy Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Xin Guobin on Wednesday in Beijing.
Speaking at a press conference of the State Council Information Office, Xin said that China will intensify efforts during the 15th Five‑Year Plan period (2026–2030) to address key challenges, including vehicle quality and autonomous driving safety. The ministry has also developed a plan for the development of the intelligent and connected NEV industry over the next five years to ensure high‑quality growth through a series of measures.
He noted that China's NEV sector has continued to grow rapidly over the past five years. "During the 14th Five‑Year Plan period (2021–2025), the scale of China's NEV industry grew from 1 million units to 10 million, and annual sales increased from 1.367 million units to 16.49 million units, with the share of NEV sales rising from 5.4% to 47.9% of total new vehicle sales. The industrial system has become increasingly comprehensive, with Chinese production of electric vehicles, batteries and key materials accounting for more than 70% of the global total. The international influence of China's NEV sector continues to grow, with products exported to more than 100 countries and regions," Xin said.
During the 15th Five‑Year Plan period, China will continue to improve product quality and will actively and prudently promote pilot programmes for the market launch and road operation of intelligent connected vehicles, he added. China will optimise operating conditions, effectively address consumer concerns and ensure that consumers are ready to buy and confident in using these vehicles, the senior official said. "We will improve the industry management system. We will strengthen supervision and inspection of product quality, effectively protect consumer rights and interests, and continue to standardise the competitive environment in the industry," he said. "We will deepen international cooperation and exchanges, make full use of multilateral and bilateral exchange mechanisms, strengthen coordination in the development of international standards and regulations, improve supporting infrastructure such as cross‑border logistics and investment and financing, and steadily promote international trade and investment cooperation, thereby enabling China to make a greater contribution to the transformation and upgrading of the global automotive industry," Xin said.
