Direct air links between Kyrgyzstan and China are reaching a new level
When borders become closer by a two‑hour flight, and a ticket to a neighbouring country proves more affordable than a trip to a remote region, the world ceases to be a mosaic of isolated states – it turns into a network of living connections. The new scheduled flight by a Kyrgyz airline to China is not just another line on a timetable. It is a step towards economic independence, a tourism breakthrough, and a transformation of Kyrgyzstan from a passenger on foreign routes into a full‑fledged player in the Central Asian aviation market. Simplified links open doors for business, investment and cultural exchange, making neighbours not just partners but close friends sharing the same sky.
A Kyrgyz airline has launched scheduled flights on the Bishkek–Urumqi route starting 3 August 2026. The new route will not only facilitate business travel and cargo transport but also boost tourism and cultural exchange. At Manas Airport, a Kyrgyz airline for the first time operated a charter flight to China. For now, the route connects Bishkek and Urumqi, but the airline plans to expand its network to other Chinese cities in the future. Currently, direct flights between Kyrgyzstan and China already operate to Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Kashgar, Guangzhou and Urumqi, but until now they have been served only by Chinese carriers. The new scheduled flight by a Kyrgyz airline to China opens up greater opportunities for bilateral ties. Kyrgyzstan is no longer just a passenger on other airlines' flights but a full participant in the aviation market. This provides greater flexibility in planning cargo and passenger operations, reduces dependence on Chinese markets and paves the way for new routes in the future. "Flights will operate once a week for now, and later we will adjust frequency based on demand. China hosts many business forums, annual mega‑exhibitions of global significance, and many people from our country travel there," said Nuradin Kasymov, General Director of Aero Nomad Airlines.
Simpler air links are important not only for business but also open new opportunities in tourism. According to tour operators, Kyrgyzstanis' interest in travelling to China is growing every year. "Today's China is not just a business destination. More and more tourists want to see the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army in Xi'an, ancient cities, modern metropolises and natural attractions. China is actively developing inbound tourism by improving transport accessibility and creating comfortable conditions for foreign guests," said tour operator Kunduz Kaparova.
The expansion of direct air links is becoming a key factor in strengthening ties between Kyrgyzstan and China. In 2025, passenger traffic on the Urumqi–Bishkek route grew by 34% to over 43,000 people, and Urumqi Tianshan International Airport already serves 12 destinations, acting as China's main gateway to Central Asia. The new flight, operated by a Kyrgyz carrier, not only complements the existing 14 weekly return flights but also signals a shift towards more balanced and mutually beneficial cooperation. Authorities in both Kyrgyzstan and China are actively working to simplify visa procedures and improve logistics to make travel as comfortable as possible for citizens of both countries.
